Before that date, the championship was entirely amateur, with historic clubs like Loyola, Dos Caminos, and Deportivo Español dominating the Caracas pitches. But the passion was growing, and professionalization was an inevitable step to give Venezuelan football the structure it deserved.
From Amateur to the Modern Era
The arrival of professional football changed the landscape. The early years saw clubs like Deportivo Portugués, Deportivo Italia, and Unión Deportiva Canarias dominate, driven by European immigration after World War II. These teams brought with them a technical and tactical style that shaped the foundations of national football. Over time, new protagonists emerged, such as Estudiantes de Mérida, Deportivo Táchira, and Caracas FC, which modernized the tournament and drew crowds to the stadiums. In 1957, the first professional tournament was played with only six teams. Deportivo Portugués was the first professional champion in Venezuela. Founded in 1974, Deportivo Táchira is one of the most emblematic clubs in the country. Their stadium, the Polideportivo de Pueblo Nuevo, is considered the "Cathedral of Venezuelan Football." With more than 10 national titles, it is the most decorated club of the modern era.
