It was the first and only Peruvian team to conquer official international titles, surpassing giants like River Plate and Boca Juniors. Club Cienciano was founded on July 8, 1901, by students of the National College of Sciences of Cusco. Hence its name. For much of the 20th century, it was a team with a local tradition, participating in regional tournaments and making sporadic appearances in the Peruvian top division.
The real leap to national and international fame came in the 2000s. From the high altitude of Cusco, at over 3,300 meters, the team began to build a footballing fortress that challenged the giants of the continent.

International Titles and Eternal Glory
Cienciano's history changed forever in 2003 when they won the Copa Sudamericana, defeating River Plate in the final. It was a monumental feat for Peruvian football. The first leg ended in a 3-3 draw in Buenos Aires, and in the return leg in Arequipa, "Papá" won 1-0 with a goal by Carlos Lugo. Continental Champions!
The following year, in 2004, Cienciano made history again by winning the Recopa Sudamericana against Boca Juniors, the Libertadores champions. The match was played in Miami and ended 1-1 after 90 minutes. The Cusco team won on penalties with a tremendous performance by Óscar Ibáñez. The dream continued to grow.
Freddy Ternero and his legacy
Behind those achievements was Freddy Ternero, the most important coach in the club's history. A former player and then coach, he built a solid team, with a lot of tactical work, committed players, and a message of regional pride. Ternero not only won titles, he won the heart of an entire country. 2003 Copa Sudamericana Champion. 2004 Recopa Sudamericana Champion. First Peruvian club with international titles.
