Foundation and Early Years
Colo-Colo was founded on April 19, 1925, by David Arellano and a group of players who sought a more ambitious and popular football project than existed at the time. The club was born with a rebellious, combative character and a working-class identity, which quickly won the affection of the people.
Its name and emblem refer to the Mapuche leader Colo Colo, in honor of indigenous resistance and the fighting spirit.
From its beginnings, Colo-Colo stood out in the amateur championships of Santiago and turned professional in 1933, the year it began to make its mark on Chilean football. The People's Club: Colo-Colo became the most popular club in Chile thanks to its fighting spirit and the charisma of its founders. Colo-Colo is the most successful club in Chilean football with more than 30 First Division titles. But without a doubt, its greatest achievement was winning the Copa Libertadores in 1991, when it defeated Olimpia in the final and became the first and only Chilean club to lift the continental trophy.
That team, managed by Mirko Jozić, made history with figures like Lizardo Garrido, Leonel Herrera, Jaime Pizarro, Rubén Martínez, and Gabriel Mendoza.
Later, the club also won the Recopa Sudamericana and the Interamerican Cup, consolidating its international status. In addition to its international achievements, Colo-Colo has been the most consistent in local tournaments. It has had undefeated campaigns, back-to-back championships, and constant prominence. In 2006 and 2007, under the management of Claudio Borghi, they won four consecutive national tournaments, with an attacking style of football that captivated the fans.
