FC Dnipro was founded in 1918 in the city of Dnipropetrovsk (present-day Dnipro), although it adopted its definitive identity in the 1970s. During the Soviet era, the club competed under different names, until establishing itself as one of the powerhouses of Ukrainian football within the USSR.
