MOLDE – NORWAY, THE STORY OF A CLUB THAT GREW WITH HEART
Molde FK, born in a small coastal town in western Norway, is a true example of footballing resilience. Founded in 1911, this club was for decades a low-profile participant in Norwegian football. But over time, its passion, organization, and vision transformed it into one of the country's giants. In this vibrant history, you'll discover everything from its humble beginnings to magical nights in Europe, including unforgettable idols and managers like Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who paved its way to glory. For every fan of Scandinavian football, this journey through Molde FK is a must.
A Dream Born in the Fjords
Molde Fotballklubb was founded on June 19, 1911, under the name "International." It wasn't until 1915 that it adopted its current name, with which it would make history in Norway. Its history is closely linked to the city of Molde, known as the "city of roses" and famous for its natural landscapes and mild summer climate. A peaceful place, but with an overflowing passion for football.
For much of the 20th century, Molde FK was a lower-division club that alternated between promotions and relegations. It wasn't until the 1970s that it began to make a name for itself in the elite of Norwegian football. In 1974, they achieved their first league runner-up finish, a milestone that ignited a competitive spark in the club and its fans. Without great resources or star players, Molde earned respect in the Tippeligaen (now Eliteserien) thanks to their tactical discipline, their commitment to local talent, and a fighting spirit. Although Rosenborg's shadow loomed large in the 90s, Molde never gave up.

At the local level, the club remained competitive, achieving more runner-up finishes and reaching its first Cup final in 1982. Although they lost to Brann, Molde's path was already pointing towards consolidation. And it was only a matter of time before glory arrived.
Titles and the European leap
Molde FK's real boom came in the 1990s and truly exploded in the 21st century. In 1994, they won their first Norwegian Cup, defeating Lyn. That victory was key to the club's motivation and institutional growth. Shortly after, in 1999, Molde made history by becoming the second Norwegian club to qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage, after eliminating Spain's Mallorca. They shared a group with Real Madrid, Porto, and Olympiacos, leaving a good impression despite the group's difficulty.
The emergence of Ole Gunnar Solskjær
If there is one name that links Molde to the great history of football, it is that of Ole Gunnar Solskjær. A product of the club's youth system, the striker moved to Manchester United in 1996 and became a legend after scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final. Years later, he returned as manager to guide the team to its first league titles. Under his leadership, Molde won its first Eliteserien title in 2011, repeating the feat in 2012. His well-structured, attacking, and winning mentality transformed the club into a true local powerhouse. He also won the Cup in 2013 before briefly leaving for England.

More than a club: a project
Molde FK not only seeks to win, but also to develop players. Their academy is one of the most respected in Norway and has produced talents for the national team and top European clubs. Furthermore, the club has a sustainable approach, is involved with the community, and is committed to developing citizens, not just footballers. At the local level, their rivalry with Rosenborg remains one of the most anticipated derbies in the country. But far from creating controversy, Molde focuses on quiet work, letting the results speak for themselves. Today, being a Molde fan is a source of pride. Not because they are the richest or most media-savvy club, but because they represent an honest and passionate way of experiencing football. And if the future is anything like the present, Molde has more golden chapters to write.
