From Nigeria to the European Dream

Taiwo Micheal Awoniyi was born on August 12, 1997, in Ilorin, Nigeria. Like many African footballers, his story began on the makeshift pitches of his neighborhood, where he played barefoot with friends. From a young age, he displayed a combination of physical power and a nose for goal that caught the attention of local coaches.

At 15, he was discovered during a youth tournament organized by the Coca-Cola Foundation in Lagos. His performance led him to join the Imperial Soccer Academy, one of the most prestigious in Nigeria. There he developed his technique, learned tactical fundamentals, and began to attract the attention of international scouts. The leap to international football: In 2013, Awoniyi was part of the Nigerian U-17 team that won the World Cup in the United Arab Emirates. Although he wasn't the tournament's biggest star, his commitment and physical ability made him stand out. Shortly after, in 2015, Liverpool FC signed him as a promising young African player. However, the road wouldn't be easy. Due to issues with his work permit in England, Awoniyi couldn't make his debut with Liverpool's first team and was loaned to various European clubs to develop. That period forged his character and playing style, turning him into a complete striker. Signed by Liverpool in 2015 at just 18 years old. He played on loan in Germany, the Netherlands, and Belgium before establishing himself. Part of the Under-17 World Cup-winning team with Nigeria. His consolidation in Europe

Between 2015 and 2021, Taiwo Awoniyi played for seven different clubs on loan: FSV Frankfurt, NEC Nijmegen, Royal Excel Mouscron, KAA Gent, Mainz 05, and Union Berlin, among others. Each step was a lesson in resilience. In Belgium, with Mouscron, he unleashed his goalscoring potential and earned the respect of the fans with his decisive performances.

Rebirth in the Bundesliga

His time at Union Berlin was the turning point. In 2021, after several loan spells, the German club decided to sign him permanently for around 6.5 million euros, making him their most expensive player up to that point. Awoniyi repaid that confidence with goals: 20 in his first season as a starter, helping Union qualify for European competitions for the first time in their modern history. 20 goals in the 2021-22 season with Union Berlin. In his first season in England, Awoniyi was key to Nottingham Forest staying in the top flight. His goals against direct rivals were decisive, especially in the final stretch of the championship. His commitment, humility, and ability to pressure defenses made him a fan favorite. He scored 10 goals in his first season with Nottingham Forest. He scored in three consecutive crucial survival matches. Voted the club's most influential player by fans in 2023. His performance cemented his status as one of the Premier League's best African strikers. Unlike other attackers who rely solely on goals, Awoniyi contributes through pressing and playmaking.
