What makes 2026 special
This will be the first World Cup with 48 teams, which allowed for an increase in the number of available slots in all confederations. Thus, teams that previously saw the World Cup as a distant dream now have a better chance. Furthermore, the format changes: there will be 12 groups of 4 teams, from which the top two teams and the best third-placed teams will qualify. More matches, more excitement!
Fun fact: Uzbekistan will play in its first World Cup. Qatar qualified after hosting in 2022. Cape Verde also makes history as a debutant.
How the Qualifiers Continue

CONMEBOL (South America)
The tournament is a double round-robin format. The top six teams qualify directly, and the seventh-placed team goes to a playoff. Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, and Paraguay have already qualified. It remains to be seen who will be the seventh team to qualify for the playoffs.
CONCACAF (North America, Central America and the Caribbean)
In addition to the three host nations already qualified, there are 3 direct spots and 2 for the playoffs. The process continues with qualifying rounds and group stages. Countries like Costa Rica, Panama, Jamaica, El Salvador, and Honduras are in contention.
UEFA (Europe)
Europe has 16 spots. Qualifying is underway with 12 groups; the winners of each group go directly to the World Cup and the runners-up to a playoff. England has already secured their place. Teams like France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, and Croatia lead their groups. AFC (Asia) has 8 direct spots and 1 playoff spot. The process has several rounds. Japan, South Korea, Iran, Australia, Qatar, Uzbekistan, and Jordan have already qualified. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are still in contention. CAF (Africa) has 9 direct spots and 1 playoff spot. The winners of 9 groups qualify. Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia, Ghana, Algeria, South Africa, and Cape Verde have already qualified. Two groups remain to be defined.
OFC (Oceania)
Oceania has, for the first time, one direct spot and one playoff spot. New Zealand has already secured its spot. The second-best team will play a playoff against another confederation.

With more teams qualified, there's no shortage of interesting facts. Uzbekistan will play in its first World Cup. Morocco continues its good run after finishing fourth in 2022. Cape Verde is another debutant. Asia has seven teams, a record number.
