Origin and Evolution of the Honduran League
The Honduran National Professional Football League was officially founded in 1964, with its first tournament played in 1965. Before that, the championships were regional, especially dominated by clubs from Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula. Club Olimpia was the first champion of the professional era, beginning a period of dominance that continues to this day.
The tournament is played in an Apertura and Clausura format, typical in Central America. Two short championships are played each year, with a regular season and a final playoff that awards the title to the winner.
